PFPS and PI-IBS
What is the difference between PI-IBS (post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome) and PFPS (post food-poinsoning syndrome)?
What is the difference between PI-IBS (post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome) and PFPS (post food-poisoning syndrome)?
There is just a thin line. Maybe PFPS is a bit more specific. Under PI-IBS we often (but not exclusively) understand follow-up symptoms of a gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis is a pathological disturbance of the gastrointestinal tract often (and therefore not always) by bacteria, viruses and - more rarely - by fungi or parasites.
While PFPS concentrates on symptoms following one or more food-poisoning(s) triggered by viruses and/or bacteria, gastroenteritis can also be triggered by inhalation, radiation and of course mental and physical stress.
What do have PI-IBS and PFPS in common?
Anxiety and stress are always additional risk factors for a flare-up. The trigger for abdominal pain, discomfort and (often) diarrhoea is a previous inflammation by one or more pathogens. In PFPS it could also be an imbalance of the gut flora without an inflammation. |
